c1880s HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH A.D. 100-325 Philip Schaff 2 VOLS Books c1880s – HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH A.D. 100-325 By Philip Schaff – Ante-Nicene Christianity. 2 VOLUMES COMPLETE Volumes 1 & 2 Hardback ILLUSTRATED Antiquarian Book, with illustrations from the catacombs on pages 867 and 868. There are also black pastedowns and endpapers. Published by T. & T. Clark, 38 George Street, Edinburgh. These volumes do not have a date on the title page, however, the preface for volume 1 refers to “In this fifth edition”, and it is dated July 1889 at the bottom. This is paired with the fact that these volumes have the same publisher’s name and publisher’s address as the 2 other sets of 2 volumes which I am selling for the same series, and they date between 1883 and 1893. It is therefore likely that these also are also of a similar publishing date. They are both stated to be new editions, thoroughly revised and enlarged. This comprises of 887 pages of the main text, over the two volumes and the pages have been checked and are all present. The 2 volumes in this book are divided as follows: Volume I: Preface, Contents, Introduction, chapters I to IX. Volume 1 ends at page 414. Volume 2: Chapters X to XIII, illustrations from the Catacombs, and the alphabetical index. Volume 2 ends at page 877. The author, Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a prominent theologian, church historian, and scholar of the 19th century. Born in Switzerland, he later emigrated to the United States, where he became a significant figure in American religious life. He was a professor in Union Theological Seminary, New York from 1870. This book, History of the Christian Church was one of his most notable contributions, this multi-volume work is a comprehensive account of the development of Christianity from its origins to his contemporary period. THESE 2 VOLUMES COVER THE PERIOD A.D. 100-325. However, further books were written in this series, “History of The Christian Church”, which extended to 590. Please note that I am selling the other books for the periods A.D. 1–100 and A.D. 311–590 in two other listings (these are also both over 2 volumes). Schaff went on to publish further works on ‘Mediaeval Christianity (A.D. 590-1517), and ‘History of The Reformation (A.D. 1517-1648). There are no dust jackets. The two volumes are both bound in the publisher’s original brown/red cloth, over boards. There are embossed borders and decorations on the boards, and gilt lettering on the spine. On both volumes there is white pen on the spine, and small labels pasted. The covers are intact, robust, and in a good condition for approximately over 130 years old. There is a little wear to the covers, and this includes bumping and small rips to the corners, very small rips at the top of the spine, a small mark/patch of rubbing on the back board of volume 1, a few small marks, light discolouration on the spines, and light rubbing at the edges (including where the spine adjoins the boards). Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are very lightly tanned, which is good for books of this age. There is some very light foxing on the endpapers. Besides this, the pages are in an overall very neat and clean state for their age, with only the very occasional light or small marks, which do not affect the text. They are predominantly uncreased, with only very small folds or light creases on a few pages. Many of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. There are many unopened pages (uncut leaves) in volume 1 (see an example of this in the photos provided). Again, this is to do with the construction method of the book and the uncut pages have not been severed from their neighbours with the paperknife. As this forms part of the history of this book, the pages have been left as they have been found, although they can easily be detached from each other should you wish. The roughly cut pages have left the occasional small rips at the edges, and a few further pages have small rips at the edges. These do not obscure the text or illustrations. On the inner edge of the front pastedown for volume 2 there are also some small rips (see photo). There are some ink splats on the reverse of the front free endpaper, and some pencil, in volume 1. A few pages have small ink stamps on them and both volumes have ex libris stickers on the front free endpaper, and 2 book plates pasted to the front pastedowns. There are also some ink and pencil on these. The book plates state: “Birmingham Clerical Society Library, Queen’s College” and the rules for Birmingham Clerical Society Library. Pages 415 to 418 are partially loose, but still attached at the bottom part of the inner edge, and still secure. There is also a light crack in the gutter between pages 418 and 419. However, there are no further issues with the binding. There are no missing pages. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. These 2 volumes are a nice and scarce example of these books, from the late 1800s. Each of the books measure approximately 23.8 cm by 16 cm. Volume 1 is approximately 3 cm wide and volume 2 is approximately 3.3 cm wide. The books collectively weigh approximately 1,590 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
