Bertha Gorst (Llangollen) etching ‘Phoenix Tower, after Edward Compton 1928 Click images to enlarge ‘Phoenix or King Charles Tower from the Canal’ Chester, Cheshire after the watercolour by Edward Harrison Compton. Bertha Aiken Gorst; 1873-1938, etcher and bookplate designer, born in Cheshire. She studied at Birkenhead and Liverpool Schools of Art. An Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. She moved to live in Llangollen, Wales. A fine original etching which is bright and unfaded, with excellent plate tone and detail in black ink, the image printed within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet size measuring approximately of 15 cm x 22 cm (6 x 8½ ins.) Signed with the artists initials and dated and titled by the artist in the image.
