Fourteen members of a Queens group that Federal prosecutors said was fast developing into a Mafia-style organized crime gang were indicted yesterday in a series of armed robberies, assaults and arson fires over the last three years. Authorities described Fabio Bartolotta, 22, as the principal organizer of the group, who, they said, plotted many of their crimes from the Cafe Giannini in Ridgewood. The gang had semiautomatic handguns, police scanners, stolen getaway cars and ski masks, they said. Zachary W. Carter, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District, said at a news conference that the gang members, all in their 20’s, did not appear to have been working for any traditional organized crime family in New York. But authorities noted that Mr. Bartolotta and another man suspected of being a gang member, his uncle, Paul Ragusa, 25, have family members who were sent to prison on heroin trafficking charges stemming from a major narcotics case in the early 1980’s that was associated with the Bonanno crime family — a case known as the Pizza Connection. Authorities said the young Queens gang had built a criminal enterprise that resembled the start-up phase of an established crime group. The 32-count racketeering indictment follows a two-year investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York City Police Department. Most of the suspects were arrested early yesterday in a sweep by more than 100 law enforcement agents. Mr. Bartolotta is already in prison on an unrelated state insurance fraud conviction. Three other gang members are serving sentences on charges related to some of the episodes named in the indictment. Mr. Ragusa was described as a fugitive. In all, the indictment charges the gang with carrying out 12 crimes, including robberies, arson, loan-sharking and assault, in Maspeth, Rego Park, Middle Village, Glendale and Ridgewood. The gang is accused of four bank robberies, three of them at the same branch of the National Westminster Bank in Ridgewood, where about $221,000 was stolen. One suspect, Josephine Troia, 24, a suspected gang associate, had previously worked at the branch and provided inside information to the group, the indictment charges. The gang also is accused of a robbery of $35,000 from the Lincoln Savings Bank in Maspeth and an unsuccessful attempt to rob the Chemical Bank in Glendale. Gang members fled when panicked tellers refused to open the teller door. The indictment also charges one suspect, John Clemenza, with scheming to have his teen-age girlfriend shot in the stomach when she refused to have an abortion. Mr. Clemenza lured the girl to an arcade, the indictment says, where several other gang members staged a robbery. The girl, who was six months pregnant, was shot and lost her baby. In their crime spree, the gang is also accused of robbing a bakery, a pizzeria and a home improvement store and trying to rob a security van of Copstat Security Inc., an armored car company, seriously injuring a security guard. They are also charged with the contract arson of a hair salon in Jackson Heights as an insurance job for a gang associate, Sandra Sanchez.
